Watching this video is not that surprising to me. I‘ve had the idea of how fast pace our demand for information is becoming. I too am part of this convergence. I own a blackberry that is on a 3g network, so for as long as I’m in coverage of my mobiles network I hold the world of information in my hand. In my opinion I think our school should change our internets connection from copper (I think it is) to fiber optics. Fiber optics guarantees us a faster connection to information. Although people are used to the regular connection the school provides us, the demand for an upgrade to fiber optics will surely be a topic of discussion in the future. As an individual the only change I would be able to make is to brainwash my peers by having a good conviction that buying an Iphone or a blackberry is essential to our need for information at any time or place.

ReplyDeleteThe video was based upon the convergence of our society into an advanced social network because of the advancements of information and how it is distributed. What this means to me as a student is that I have to understand ways to gain the proper information I want through the internet. This translates into learning the proper methods of gaining information correctly from the internet. Because of this shift in information and how it is distributed the schools should teach students how to better gain their information from the internet and how to properly dissect the information. This shift also means that the school has to shift along with the digital move of information. Our school has wireless internet and computers accessibility but that is not enough. With the advancement of information the schools could have more classes in regards to this shift and how to properly use the information. I know that here at North Seattle Community College the librarians have short classes that will teach students how to access websites that will offer better and more information at the collegiate level. But why don’t they offer this as a course, such as the LIB 150 course? If courses like this were available it would help students change their methods of gaining information.

ReplyDeleteThis video means that the scientific technology has devloped drastically and we are living in a world that is really fast changing world that the computers we are using these days are way smarter, cheaper, and smaller than the one the MIT had in 1960’s. Internet services such as youtube and facebook are the services that didn’t exist in 6 years ago. People are using more and more digital technologies rather than analog systems. I am glad that I am living in a world that is changing fast as this. I like developing more and more and faster and faster. I like to get a new developed version of cell phone, computer, and scientifice services.
Our school are responding those devlopments but still needs to respond more. For example, like this class. We are taking through online. We have a good internet website that provides discussion forum, way to communicate with instructor, and ciriculum and calendar. However, still the services and the lectures are unclear to learn only through words. Using the modern technology such as video clips for the lecture will be way better than present system. Also, get a Synchronous system so that we can communicate in a real time with other classmates and instructor.
Addionally on school system we could use cell phone text services to tell the students about the class schedules that has been changed and changes in syllabus so that students will not forget to find it on the website or email.
I will be open minded to accept new technologies and services. Learn how to use it systematically. When the new techonologies come out I want to be the first one who uses that and figure out what is good and bad and give feedback to that company and make that techonology better.

ReplyDeleteThis video was pretty cool and the statistics kind of blew my mind, because it made me realize how much the world has changed, even from 15 years ago. To me this video meant that there is a shift in the way we get our information and that it's important to keep up with this convergence. I think schools need to respond by offering more classes online such as ebooks. For me personally I think its important to keep up with these changes, without suffering from information overload -- because as we're learning knowledge is power -- however we choose to define that.

ReplyDeleteI agree with Janice's opinion that to make a change as an individual we should get a iphone or blackberry for essential for need for information anytime, anywhere. As the journalist Alvin Toffler said the world we are living is the third wave whcih is the world of information. The information and knolwede is the basic of the production of the current world. We should be able to get information and knowledge whenever, wherever by getting a iphone or blackberry.
i ABSOLUTELY DISAGREE with most of these comments, no offense to you all. I think that the fact that personal communication has been elimated. Facebook, google, and everyother unnesccesary technology makes people LAZY! there is no reason why we need to have every possible tool with us at all times. In my opinion, i think that if the world is going to end by 2012, it will be because of things like this. The corporations of america are controlling the way that we feel about ourselves. Im only 19, but i think im the only person i know my age who doesnt have a facebook by choice. I did have one, and i will admit that it does become necessary as you start to rely on it. but bottom line, you dont need it. call someone if you want to talk to them. its impersonal and stupid. and iphones? no one but ceos need them.
ReplyDeleteThe video is interesting in the sense that it shows that traditional forms of media are slowly going out of sync. But all the images were just rehashes of what it was already saying earlier in the video. One thing I was hoping to would address would be how record sales would be affected in light of mp3 downloads and file-sharing, but as for file-sharing I guess that’s something that had to have been dealt with while records were still the primary medium of music. But I don’t think that certain things, like TV, radio, or newspapers are going to be totally phased out, and I don’t think the video necessarily suggests that it will, as I think many people who just so used to used those things will continue to do, and I think the demographic that does so would be the older generation.
